About
I'm Derrick Lawter. I bring ideas to life and build technology that solves real problems.
I've always been interested in how things work, but even more interested in what could be done differently. That curiosity has taken me through marketing, sales, operations, and eventually software development.
I enjoy the creative side of business just as much as the commercial side. I like figuring out what people actually want, developing an idea around that need, and finding a way to bring it to market. There's something incredibly satisfying about taking something that only existed as a concept and turning it into something people can actually use.
Over the years, I've had the opportunity to work across nearly every part of that process.
Today, I'm Director of Operations & Sales at WebMarkets, a digital marketing agency in Boise, Idaho. I lead our team, oversee client strategy and delivery, and help guide the commercial direction of the business. Before this, I founded and operated Funnel Construction, my own digital marketing agency, for more than three years.
Over my career, I've personally sold more than $750,000 in recurring annualized agency revenue, while also managing the operational side of delivering on those commitments.

My framework
I designed and built PASE, an internal framework companies use to manage projects and initiatives: define the outcome, build what it needs, design the systems that keep it running, then execute against the plan. Read PASE →
Why I write
Writing is how I work out what I actually think. Most of my ideas start as a question - why something works the way it does, or what would happen if it were done differently - and writing is how I test them. I write about how people think, how organizations get things done, and how technology is changing both, along with what I'm learning from building along the way.
